Three hard periods were fought between the two teams, both teams taking leads and making comebacks. With just under 4 minutes remaining, St. Mark's found themselves trailing 4-3. Unexpectedly, a redirected shot from the offensive blue-line makes its way past the Proctor goaltender. As the final seconds were winding away, it appeared the two teams would be playing overtime to break the 4-4 tie. With about 10 seconds remaining, a shot from a Proctor defenseman through a crowd of players lands in the St. Mark's goaltender's glove. After the ref drops the puck at the next faceoff and a couple seconds have passed, one of the St. Mark's players gets off the ice and #13 (Derek Osik) jumps on. Almost instantly, #17 connects a cross-ice pass to #13, who beats the last Proctor defenseman and is going 1-on-1 with the Proctor goaltender with under 3 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, he is not able to get a quality shot as the Proctor defenseman slashes and hooks him with his stick. A textbook call by the ref indicates that #13 for St. Mark's will take a penalty shot (textbook rules state that penalty shots have three criteria; the player must have full possession of the puck, no one is between the player and the goaltender, and the infraction on the player must come from behind) with 1.9 seconds on the clock in a 4-4 tied semi-final playoff game.
